Why On-Site Swimming Works

The Benefits for Your School

Bringing the pool onto your school site changes what a swimming programme can deliver. It removes the travel and admin that eat into lesson time, keeps pupils learning in a safe and familiar setting with qualified instructors, and gives you clear progress information for every child.

More Learning Time

On-site delivery means pupils spend less time travelling and more time actually swimming, so every session delivers maximum learning and progress.

Less Travel and Admin

No transport planning, no off-site timetables, no permission slip chasing. We handle the logistics so your staff can focus on teaching.

Safe On-Site Provision

The pool operates under comprehensive safety procedures, with qualified lifeguard support and a secure, supervised environment on your own school site.

Qualified Swim Delivery

Sessions are delivered by qualified swimming instructors who understand primary school settings and how to build confidence in the water.

Progress Tracking and Reporting

Each pupil's progress is tracked against national curriculum outcomes for swimming and water safety, with clear reporting for schools and parents.

Inclusive Access for More Children

On-site delivery helps more pupils take part consistently, including those who struggle with off-site travel, giving every child the opportunity to learn to swim.

Swim Learn Achieve temporary pop-up pool facility on a school site

The Facility

A Dedicated Indoor Facility on Your Site

Swim Learn Achieve uses an enclosed, purpose-built pool structure that sits securely on the school site for the duration of the programme. It is designed to feel like a dedicated indoor facility, not a temporary setup.

The structure supports safe, calm, and organised sessions. Entry and exit are controlled, with 24/7 video surveillance. The internal space is bright and private, with surfaces chosen for slip prevention and easy cleaning.

The enclosed layout helps with supervision and safeguarding: staff can manage movement in and out of the space effectively throughout the school day.

The Facility

Secure Indoor Pool Structure

Our temporary indoor pool structure is designed to give schools a safe, secure and professional swimming environment on their own site. It protects the pool area, supports smooth delivery, and helps pupils learn in a calm, controlled space without the disruption of travelling off site.

The structure helps create a dedicated swimming space within the school grounds, giving pupils a clear separation between the normal school day and their swimming lesson. It also gives staff, parents and school leaders confidence that the programme is being delivered in a controlled environment with appropriate access, supervision and operational checks in place.

This approach allows schools to offer swimming and water safety in a more practical way, while reducing the pressure that usually comes with organising transport, external pool bookings and off-site timetables.

We work with specialist structure providers who understand temporary school-based installations. Their experience helps ensure the pool environment is planned, installed and managed with the right level of care, safety and professionalism from the start.

The pool is housed inside a temporary indoor structure designed to keep the swimming area enclosed, protected and controlled. Lockable access points help safeguard the space outside lesson times, giving schools confidence that the facility is secure while on site.

The setup is planned around the school environment to reduce disruption. Installation is completed by suitable specialists, with the aim of getting the pool and structure ready safely, efficiently and with minimal impact on the normal school day.

The structure and pool setup are planned with safety at the centre. Site checks, risk assessments and operating procedures are used to make sure the facility is suitable, supervised and ready for children to take part in swimming and water safety sessions.

Support does not stop once the structure is in place. The delivery model includes ongoing checks, communication and practical support so that the programme can run smoothly, safely and professionally throughout its time on the school site.

The Swim:ED Difference

Not All Pop-Up Pools Are Created Equal

A heated pool is only the beginning.

Bringing a swimming pool onto a school site is only part of the solution. The quality of the structure, the environment around the pool, the way it is installed and the support behind the programme all shape what pupils actually experience.

Swim:ED is designed as a complete school swimming environment, with the structure, teaching, safety framework and support built around the needs of schools and their pupils.

The Structure

More Than a Marquee

The structure surrounding the pool is a major part of the swimming environment. It shapes how the space feels, how it is secured, and how calmly sessions can run.

Alternative Temporary Set-Up

Illustrative lightweight marquee used for a temporary pool set-up on a school site

A functional temporary solution

A lightweight marquee can provide a functional temporary enclosure for an above-ground swimming pool, protecting the immediate pool area from the weather and creating a defined space for lessons. However, the structure itself remains a temporary vinyl system. Depending on the installation, it may rely on external ballast such as water-filled barrels or weighted bags rather than being rigidly fixed to a prepared structural base. The images below highlight some of these different temporary construction methods and how they compare with the purpose-designed Swim:ED environment.

TheSwim:EDStandard

Swim:ED enclosed pool structure with rigid wall panels and glazed entrance doors on a school site

A purpose-designed swimming environment

Swim:ED creates a purpose-designed swimming environment around the pool rather than simply enclosing it within a temporary marquee. The structure uses a rigid frame, solid wall panels, glazed entrance doors and controlled access points to create a more substantial and enclosed facility on the school site. Its construction provides a defined internal environment designed specifically around the delivery of swimming lessons, with the pool, surrounding space, access and internal surfaces considered together as part of the installation. The result is a dedicated school swimming environment that feels and functions much more like an indoor facility than a temporary event structure.

The Details

Built Differently

The most important differences are often found in the details around the pool, not in the pool itself.

Structure

Typical Temporary Set-Up

Temporary white vinyl pool enclosure stabilised with green water-filled barrels

This lightweight vinyl enclosure is stabilised using water-filled barrels rather than being rigidly fixed to a prepared structural base. It provides a functional temporary cover, but it demonstrates the difference between a weighted marquee system and the solid, purpose-designed structure used for the Swim:ED environment.

TheSwim:EDStandard

Close-up of the Swim:ED structure showing rigid wall panels, aluminium framing and glazed doors

The Swim:ED structure uses a rigid frame, solid wall panels and lockable glazed doors to create a purpose-designed swimming environment. Installed by specialist structure providers on a suitable school-site surface, it provides a more substantial and controlled enclosure than the lightweight weighted marquee systems shown above.

Ground and Flooring

Typical Temporary Set-Up

Illustrative temporary pool standing on grass with foam mats used as flooring

Here the pool is positioned directly over a grass surface, with interlocking foam mats used to create a basic temporary floor around part of the pool. It provides a usable short-term set-up, but it is different from a purpose-prepared, consistent surface designed specifically for a swimming environment.

TheSwim:EDStandard

Swim:ED pool with prepared interlocking flooring around the swimming area

Every Swim:ED installation begins with a site suitability assessment covering the available surface, space, access and utilities. The swimming environment is then prepared with appropriate internal surfaces selected for regular use, cleaning and slip prevention rather than relying on an improvised grass and foam-mat floor.

Space and Access

Typical Temporary Set-Up

Temporary swimming pool positioned close to the surrounding vinyl marquee with restricted perimeter space

The pool sits very close to the surrounding marquee, leaving little usable space along the sides and restricting movement around the perimeter. This can limit where instructors position themselves for teaching and supervision, while also making it harder to reach different sides of the pool quickly when assistance or an emergency response is required.

TheSwim:EDStandard

Pupils accessing the Swim:ED pool area with a member of staff

The Swim:ED environment is designed to provide controlled entry, exit and usable space around the swimming area. This gives staff greater freedom to position themselves for teaching and supervision and supports quicker access around the pool when assistance is needed.

The Complete Programme

And the Difference Doesn't Stop at the Pool

Swim:ED is a school swimming programme, not just equipment delivered to a site. The pool and the structure are the visible part. Around them sit the teaching, safety framework and support that make the programme work.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Swim Learn Achieve brings swimming and water safety directly onto your school site, using the Swim:ED heated on-site pool environment and delivered by qualified instructors. There is no off-site travel, so pupils spend more of their time in the water.

Swimming and water safety are taught together throughout the programme. Pupils develop swimming skills and water confidence, build safer behaviours around water, and work towards the National Curriculum swimming and water safety outcomes.

The provision comes to the school rather than pupils travelling out. The pool is erected and managed directly on your school site, so there is no coach travel and no off-site timetabling.

That means less learning time lost to travel, less disruption to the school day, and less of the administration that comes with organising off-site swimming, from transport arrangements to permission slip chasing. Organisation stays simple for your staff.

The pool is a managed, supervised swimming environment housed in a secure lockable structure on the playground. At approximately 10 metres by 5 metres, and approximately 1.2 metres deep throughout, it is sized for small group swimming lessons at primary level, where staff can support pupils in the water.

Delivery operates under a Pool Safety Operating Procedure, Normal Operating Procedure and Emergency Action Plan. A risk assessment is completed for every site and reviewed before each programme begins, and qualified lifeguard support is included throughout all sessions.

Progress is tracked against the National Curriculum outcomes for swimming and water safety throughout the programme.

Schools receive clear reporting on each pupil's progress, which can be shared with parents, governors and other school stakeholders.

We handle the setup, maintenance and delivery. The school provides access to a suitable area of playground or field, and a standard electrical supply.

Before setup we complete a site suitability check covering space, access, surface and utility requirements. That check confirms whether your site can accommodate the pool, what preparation, if any, is needed, and the exact specifications for your school.

Each session is led by qualified swimming instructors experienced in delivering National Curriculum swimming to primary-age pupils, with trained lifeguard support throughout.

All delivery staff hold enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and are first aid qualified.

School Feedback

What Schools Value About On-Site Swimming

Schools that have run on-site swimming keep returning to the same points. Less disruption and cost around the programme, more time in the water and more confident swimmers, and clearer progress information to share with parents, governors and inspectors.

Less Travel Disruption

Schools tell us that removing the need to travel to a leisure centre reduces organisation time for staff and keeps pupils focused on learning. No more late buses or lost lesson time.

More Swimming, Less Waiting

With the pool on site, pupils spend more of each lesson actually in the water. Teachers see better progress because every minute counts.

Growing Water Confidence

Children who were anxious about swimming in an unfamiliar setting gain confidence in the calm, familiar surroundings of their own school. Teachers notice the difference.

Stronger Attendance and Engagement

On-site swimming removes barriers like permission slips and transport, helping more pupils take part consistently. Attendance stays high throughout the programme.

Clearer Insight Into Progress

Progress data against curriculum outcomes gives schools a clear picture of what pupils can do, useful for reporting to parents, governors, and inspectors.

Better Value for Schools

On-site swimming reduces transport costs, lost learning time, and admin-heavy off-site planning. Schools get a focused swimming programme delivered directly on site, helping make every lesson count.
